Excellence · Creativity · Integrity · Respect · Equality

Motto

Strong Students. Strong Community.

A Brief History (old /history)

In 1899, Amy Zwemer saw a need to educate the young girls, including her daughters, in her neighborhood. They were eager and ready to learn. Armed with only a few books and an enthusiasm that was second to none, Ms. Zwemer met with these seven girls on her back porch and taught writing and reading. She called her school The Acorn School.

Connected with the American Mission Hospital, and the work directed by her husband, Samuel Zwemer, her little school began to grow. In less than three years, there was a need for a school building to be built. With donations from churches from the Reformed Church in America in the US, a church and school building were built. Every day 10-15 students attended to learn reading, writing and arithmetic. In the afternoons, trade crafts were taught by American staff and Bahraini members of the community.

The school continued to grow over the years, eventually becoming an all-girls school. In the 1930's, there was a demand to begin a formal boy's section in the school. Eventually the school became known as the American Mission School, the name by which many in the community know it today, serving students from KG - Grade 9. During that time, it held classes at the church facilities, which themselves morphed and changed over the decades.

In 1994, the current campus was built, and the school moved to its current campus. In the early 2000's, grades 10, 11, and 12 were added, and the first graduating class walked in 2008. Most recently, the school has added the Advanced Placement curriculum for students, and has been awarded accreditation with AdvancEd, the world's largest accrediting body. The school continues to work towards building a strong community through building strong students.

School Curriculum (old /curriculam)

Al Raja School follows an Arabic, Islamic Religion, Social Studies, Citizenship and Physical Education Ministry of Education curriculum, supplemented with other Ministry of Education-approved resources. The Ministry of Education has approved our American-based curriculum for subjects in the domains of English, Math, Science, Technology and Art. Students in High School have the option of taking advanced level (AP) courses certified and externally assessed by CollegeBoard.

Lower Elementary (old /lower-elementary)

The primary objective of the lower elementary section is to establish a robust educational foundation for students. Instruction is predominantly conducted in Arabic, complemented by additional lessons in English aimed at fostering basic literacy skills in both languages.

The KG - grade 2 students of the Lower Elementary engage in learning through various centers, play-based activities, and hands-on experiences within the classroom setting. This interactive learning approach effectively promotes physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Furthermore, the formal curriculum is enriched by a diverse array of extracurricular activities, allowing students to benefit from a safe and supportive environment that prioritizes growth and personal development, all under the guidance of dedicated and nurturing staff.

Upper Elementary (old /upper-elementary)

In the upper elementary section, grade 3 – grade 5, learners assume greater responsibility for their educational journey and have the opportunity for the development of leadership skills.

Commencing in grade 3, English serves as the primary medium of instruction, while there remains a sustained emphasis on Arabic language acquisition and Islamic Studies, in accordance with the requirements set forth by the Bahrain Ministry of Education. Regularly integrated projects and inquiry-based activities are designed to promote creativity and enhance critical thinking skills.

In addition, weekly extracurricular classes provide students with the opportunity to explore diverse areas of interest, including STEAM activities, project-based learning, drama, cooking, public speaking, coding, and various field trips throughout the year. These experiences are instrumental in enhancing engagement and development in areas that extend beyond the formal curriculum.

Middle School (old /middle-school)

Middle School at Al Raja provides an opportunity for our students to develop and adjust from elementary to high school. The program emphasizes independence and student agency through leadership opportunities, positive relationships, and increasing choice and exposure to variety. Genes Day and other Department-Focus days enhance our core program by providing opportunities to pursue interests and showcase talents, while building 21st century skills and social awareness. Adaptive assessments are used in addition to academic portfolio development and benchmark tests and exams. Our middle school enables our students to flourish through the breadth and depth of programs, opportunities, and support we provide.

In addition to academic excellence, we place a strong emphasis on character development, collaboration, and leadership. With extracurricular activities, team-building experiences, and community service opportunities, our middle school students are encouraged to explore their passions, discover their strengths, and become confident, compassionate leaders.

High School (old /high-school)

In High School at Al Raja, we provide a balanced academic environment that prepares students to be strong contributors in a rich and beneficial community. Our curriculum is designed to challenge and open up new worlds and possibilities, offering a diverse selection of subjects and opportunities to grow personally, intellectually and socially. With a focus on choice and the learner's key role in shaping their lifelong education, we delight in blending academic excellence with the relational and emotional well-being of our students, individually and collectively.

At Al Raja our High School Elective Program offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of interests beyond the core curriculum. Our elective courses provide hands-on learning experiences in subjects such as Arts, Drama, Robotics, Computer Science, Business, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Home Economics. Whether students are interested in graphic design, coding, photography, or environmental science, our electives allow them to deepen their knowledge and explore new areas of interest in a supportive and challenging environment.

The Advanced Placement program provides the opportunity for students to challenge themselves with university-level courses. These rigorous subjects go deep to develop very useful skills and a knowledge base that will prove useful in post-secondary education and in the real world. They also activate study skills and professionalism. Success is often rewarded through admission and scholarship opportunities in universities worldwide, and even exemption from foundation-level courses.

• Grade 8 and Grade 6 Mother After my long journey at Al-Raja School for more than 10 years, being a mother of three students in the school, I would like to express my gratitude and extend a warm thank you to the school's administration for their efforts in developing the school, especially in the past three years. The school is not only educating my children but also shaping and nurturing strong and creative personalities. As a mother of a child with learning challenges, I am unable to express enough gratitude for the amazing qualitative support I got from the LE Department. What I find remarkable about the school is its focus on students' strengths and the dedication to focus on their improvements & development. I would like to thank all the staff for their dedicated efforts, cooperation, and patience with our children.

Principal (old /principal)

Welcome to Al Raja School.

For more than 125 years, Al Raja has been part of the educational landscape of Bahrain, educating generations of young people and building a proud legacy of academic excellence, strong values and community. Many former students remain connected to the school as parents, community members and leaders, continuing a relationship with Al Raja that extends well beyond their own years as students.

At the heart of an Al Raja education is our bilingual approach, with Arabic and English as mediums of instruction. This is one of the defining strengths of our school. Our students develop a strong connection to their language, culture and identity while gaining the English proficiency, knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.

We are equally proud of our tradition of academic rigour, high expectations and strong results. Our students are challenged to think deeply, work hard, remain curious and strive for excellence. As they progress through the school, including opportunities through our Advanced Placement programme, we want every student to develop the knowledge, confidence and independence needed to succeed at the next stage of their education and pursue opportunities at universities in Bahrain and around the world.

Our students experience this education within exceptional school facilities that support learning, creativity, collaboration, sport and personal development. We believe that a great education extends beyond the classroom, giving students opportunities to explore their interests, discover their talents and participate fully in school life.

But what truly makes a school exceptional is its people.

We want every student at Al Raja to feel known, valued, challenged and inspired. Our dedicated teachers and staff create an environment where strong relationships, high expectations and a genuine sense of belonging provide the foundation for students to thrive.

Our responsibility also extends beyond academic achievement. We want our students to become curious and confident learners, thoughtful individuals and responsible leaders. We want them to respect others, appreciate the diversity of the world around them, develop their own voice and recognise that character, kindness and the way we treat people matter.

We have much to be proud of at Al Raja, and much to look forward to.

Our history gives us strong foundations. What we build upon them together will shape the next chapter of our school.

For families considering Al Raja School, our team would be delighted to meet you. We invite you to schedule a visit, experience our exceptional facilities and school community first hand, meet members of our team and discover what a rigorous, bilingual Al Raja education can offer your child.

I warmly invite you to explore our website and learn more about our school, our people and the opportunities awaiting our students.

Warm regards,
