An Open Letter from Mr. Gary Brown, written after the April 2014 Alumni Gathering
My Dear Friends,
It was such a privilege to have been with you on the eventful evening of April 1. For most of Bahrain it will be remembered as the night of the worst dust/sand storm of recent times but for the Al Raja School family it will be the night we all came together. For the 500+ people in the room it was an opportunity to look back into the past and remember the ‘good old school days.’ And indeed they were good although each of you will probably remember a day or two you would rather have skipped; true for me as well. How wonderful to be able to meet again people who were important in our lives years ago - fellow students and teachers.
For some of you these people are still among your dearest friends and it was clear to all that evening the depth of warmth and love we all have for ‘our school.’ It was grand that the school chose to honor some of its past heroes. Thanks to the Board, the Administration and the Alumni Event Committee for their hard work in making this event happen! For me, the evening was really about YOU.
As I surveyed the room among an infinite number of selfies, group photos and not very successfully recognizing the 30, 40, and 50 year-olds I knew and loved when you were all 14 or 15, I was struck by an amazing sight – you and your great success! I am so deeply proud of all of you and the many amazing things you have accomplished – I was blown away! I thought, “Nowhere in all of the nation will you find a gathering that so much reflects what is good in Bahrain.” Congratulations to each and every one of you! It is because of you that I often say, “Jismi Ameriki; qalbi Bahraini.” I wish you continuing success in all that you do.
Keep remembering YOUR school and help support the alumni association and its programs. Stay together as a family and be agents for peace in our world.
